The short version of what Daikoku Parking Area is and what to expect on a visit — with a link to our full guide.
Daikoku Parking Area is arguably the most famous location associated with Japan's car-meet scene: an ordinary expressway rest stop in Yokohama that became a global JDM landmark. If you're planning a visit, here's the short version of what to expect (our complete Daikoku Parking Area guide covers all of it in depth).
Even a few years after it opened in 1989, Daikoku was already a popular car meet spot for locals, thanks to its easy access, large parking space, and convenient facilities.
Daikoku also faces real pressures today: the problematic behavior of a few drivers is an issue unchanged from the 1990s, while other problems such as overcrowding are becoming more visible with the growing global popularity of JDM and Daikoku.
As someone who's been going to Daikoku since 1994, I share my full take: the history, the best times to go, the closures to watch for, and the etiquette that keeps the place alive, in our complete Daikoku Parking Area guide. I hope this can clear some misconceptions and allow people to enjoy Daikoku for a long time.
